The Calabash tree, Crescentia Cuijete of the family Bignoniaceae, grows in tropical and subtropical climates of the Americas.
The flesh of its fruit is inedible.

After opening the shell, the soft fruit is scraped out and discarded.  The hard shell lends itself to many purposes. After drying it for several days, it turns from green to brown.  It is now ready for sanding, carving and painting. The last process is varnishing.
